Safety Tips
Your safety matters to us. Here are tips to help you stay safe while using Tando.
At Tando, we're committed to building a respectful, safe space for the Afro community and diaspora. While we take measures to protect our users — including profile guidelines and community standards — your personal safety also depends on the choices you make. These tips will help you navigate online dating safely and confidently.
01
Protecting Your Profile
- Don't share personal details like your home address, workplace, or financial information in your profile or early conversations.
- Use photos that don't reveal identifying details (street signs, house numbers, workplace logos).
- Keep your social media accounts private until you feel comfortable sharing them.
- Be cautious about sharing your full name early on — use your first name only until you've built trust.
02
Chatting Safely
- Take your time getting to know someone before sharing personal information.
- Trust your instincts — if something feels off about a conversation, it probably is.
- Be wary of people who quickly try to move the conversation off the app to unmonitored platforms.
- Never send money or financial information to someone you haven't met in person, no matter how convincing their story is.
- Watch for inconsistencies in their stories or profile details — these can be signs of dishonesty.
03
Meeting In Person
- Always meet in a public place for your first few dates — a café, restaurant, or busy park.
- Tell a friend or family member where you're going, who you're meeting, and when you expect to be back.
- Arrange your own transportation to and from the date. Don't rely on your date for a ride.
- Stay sober and alert — avoid drinking too much on early dates.
- Have your phone fully charged and easily accessible.
- If you feel uncomfortable at any point, leave. Your safety is more important than being polite.
04
Spotting Red Flags & Scams
- Be cautious of profiles with only one photo, no bio, or generic-sounding descriptions.
- Watch out for people who express strong emotions very quickly (love bombing).
- Never send money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency to someone you've met online.
- Be suspicious of people who always have excuses for not meeting in person or video calling.
- If someone asks for your banking details, passwords, or identity documents, report them immediately.
- Romance scams often involve elaborate stories about emergencies, travel troubles, or medical bills.
05
Reporting & Blocking
- If someone makes you feel uncomfortable, block them immediately — you don't owe anyone an explanation.
- Report any profiles that seem fake, suspicious, or violate our community guidelines.
- Report any harassment, threats, or inappropriate behaviour through the app.
- If you believe you're in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services first, then let us know.
- We take all reports seriously and investigate every one.
06
Consent & Respect
- Respect other people's boundaries at all times — both online and in person.
- No means no. If someone isn't interested, accept it gracefully and move on.
- Consent must be clear, enthusiastic, and ongoing. It can be withdrawn at any time.
- Never pressure someone into sharing photos, meeting up, or doing anything they're uncomfortable with.
- Treat every person on Tando the way you'd want to be treated.
